If you’re familiar with the teachings of Eckhart Tolle, you must know about the pain body.

The pain body is explained in Eckhart’s book The Power of Now this way:

As long as you are unable to access the power of the Now, every emotional pain that you experience leaves behind a residue of pain that lives on in you.

It merges with the pain from the past, which was already there, and becomes lodged in your mind and body. This, of course, includes the pain you suffered as a child, caused by the unconsciousness of the world into which you were born.

This accumulated pain is a negative energy field that occupies your body and mind. If you look on it as an invisible entity in its own right, you are getting quite close to the truth. Its the emotional pain-body.

The Power of Now

This pain body is present within every human being unless one is liberated. And you will notice that the more aware you become, the more you call forth this pain body in other people.

My unpleasant pain body experience

When I was spending time in the UK, I had to experience this unpleasantness. It was my friend whose pain body got triggered.

He started shouting at me and I saw that what I was dealing with was not him anymore. But it did surprise me that what was a non-confrontational conversation could call forth such an experience.

It was the unreasonable pain body that was doing the shouting. And the reason it got to that unpleasant state was because he failed to engage my pain body so his own pain body got enraged because it failed to get his energetic food from my reaction. I was just there, present, and this drew out of him the pain body completely, so I saw it in its full wonder.

I knew it cannot be affected by reason, but I also knew that if I keep my awareness, there’s a hope of my friend seeing how his body was acting.

Although this experience was shocking, I knew that the entity that I was dealing with was not my friend, and that kept me cool. And after this incident he indeed became aware of his unreasonable behavior, got embarrassed, and then even bought me gifts to show how sorry he was.

I know why this happened. It’s not the first time. When you try to be aware, you provoke the pain bodies of other people. Eckhart too wrote about it in his second book A New Earth.

After he had helped to release a heavy pain body of his client, he went to eat to an Indian restaurant and here’s what happened:

I sat down at a table and ordered a meal. There were a few other guests. At a nearby table, there was a middle-aged man in a wheelchair who was just finishing his meal. He glanced at me once, briefly but intensely. A few minutes passed.

Suddenly he became restless, agitated, his body began twitching. The waiter came to take his plate. The man started arguing with him.

“The food was no good. It was dreadful.” “Then why did you eat it?” asked the waiter. And that really set him off. He started shouting, became abusive. Vile words were coming out of his mouth; intense, violent hatred filled the room. One could feel that energy entering the cells of one’s body looking for something to latch on to.

Now he was shouting at the other guests too, but for some strange reason ignoring me completely as I sat in intense Presence. I suspected that the universal human pain-body had come back to tell me,

“You thought you defeated me. Look, I’m still here.” I also considered the possibility that the released energy field left behind our session followed me to the restaurant and attached itself to the one person in whom it found a compatible vibrational frequency, that is to say, a heavy pain body.

A New Earth

This also reminds me of an incident I experienced when I was a new traveler in India. Once I was invited to have a meal with a group of other people. One of the people invited was a German yogi man, who was, unlike most yogis in India, grounded and spiritual.

He was trying out the total presence technique and used it on each one of us at the meal. We all felt his intense focus and some people were fine with that, some got very uncomfortable, and some – totally unreasonable.

One man started shouting at him just for that look, attacking him with the nastiest words. He almost got physically abusive and we had to stop him. We all got shaken by the innocent focus calling forth such a spectacle.

That’s the power of awareness to fight the pain body. Awareness itself calls it forth and then you can see what that human pain really is – a murderous, hideous, evil entity.

Awareness is the only thing that can dissolve it, because awareness doesn’t feed it. It calls it forth and then starts dissolving it. That’s the way to dissolve it within you, and that’s the way to help to dissolve it in others.

If you react to it, you’ve lost because it gets your energy and replenishes itself. If you don’t react, you weaken it though the display could get really nasty, especially if you’re weakening it in other people.

The darkness of pain body cannot hide in the light of awareness. So that’s the only way to fight it. And though it can be very unpleasant, we, as lights in this world, sometimes have to do such jobs in order to help our lost brethren.
